2018: Life+Style Goals and Improvements

Hey y’all, happy new year!

I’m not a “new year, new me” person but I’m all about improving. It’s been about a year since I’ve knowingly stopped eating meat and this year I’m striving to improve my awareness. I’m also implementing more natural products into my lifestyle. I’ll hopefully be doing more reviews of the natural products I try. I’m not trying to sway anyone to my way of life, but maybe I can answer questions or ease the skepticism of anyone who may be on the fence.

One of the things I hope to accomplish this year is to visit more vegetarian/pescatarian/vegan friendly restaurants in Charleston. I’m all about trying new things, so this should be a fun goal to fulfill. This weekend I visited the new location of one of my favorite places–Dellz on the Macon! Dellz is family owned and operated and has some of the best food I’ve ever had. They serve up a great combination of good, healthy food with robust flavor. It’s feel good food with friends because it’s a small and cozy environment.

Ireana of XOXO, I. Joelle and I had a great meeting over their Dellz Nachos (with meatless meat crumbles).

This was her first time trying Dellz and I think I’ve got her addicted to their fresh, vegan chocolate chip cookies. Those cookies are honestly heaven on earth!

We also ran into the homie, KJ Kearney, who dropped some real business knowledge. This year needs to be more about coming together, finding, and securing all the bags we can. Shout out to KJ’s mom, Miss Karen, for also putting us on to some new ways to put ourselves out there!

Dellz on the Macon really is full of magic. It’s a melting pot of good food, good music, good people, and good vibes. Pay what you can and pay it forward–they’re all about putting good karma out into the universe. The Macon couldn’t have gained a better new gathering place.

What would this outing and this post be without outfit details? I finally got a chance to break out my new dress from the Tracee Ellis Ross for JC Penney collection! Amazing fit and quality and I’m so sad the collection isn’t permanent! My wardrobe needs more from Tracee!

paying style homage

Hey y’all! It’s no secret that I am truly captivated by Nicole Richie. I’ve been inspired by her story and loved watching her grow from bad girl to boss babe. Her style has evolved her from fast and trendy to everlasting, fashion forward bohemian chic goddess. One of my most favorite looks of hers is one that’s extremely simple, but styled to perfection. It’s one that she’s truly made her own.

One thing that I’ve always wanted to do, but never had a rhyme or reason for was to create this look. With the help of Jennifer Collins, I brought the look to life in my own way. It’s a chance to pay homage to one of my style icons and a chance to improve and perfect upon my own look. Enjoy!

bringing a little BK to CHS

Hey y’all! So, remember my last post about my pre-black Friday finds? Therein I said that I should show the entire outfit put together? Photo shoot style? Well, I accomplished a goal! I had my own solo photo shoot with the amazingly talented Jennifer Collins!

It was a crazy and windy day on the waterfront, but we managed to make magic and make a part of downtown Charleston look like a little slice of Brooklyn. The greatest feat accomplished was that as a person who’s always cold, I didn’t show it! I sniffled a time or two, but I didn’t let the weather faze me. I was strong and confident and Jennifer made me look amazing!

better late than never

Hey y’all! I probably should’ve blogged about this last week when I’d actually purchased these things, but #life. It happens. It gets in the way AND I’m a biological procrastinator. #SorryNotSorry I picked up some cute things from Old Navy’s sale last week. I always go in, but rarely do I buy; however, these two pieces really caught my eye.

I actually saw that honeycomb stitch hi-lo sweater online in a golden yellow color and that was my initial reason for going there, but those pants caught me before I even got to the sweaters. Maybe it’s just me, but a pair of red floral print pants just seem like a really great, quirky idea. Fun, yet practical. All eyes on me and my fancy pants? Well, why not?!

These pixie pants are mid rise and ankle cut. They fit really well, which shocks me coming from Old Navy–but I’m 100% sure that my issue with them is their jeans. They just don’t fit me right in length or waist. Idk, but that’s a tale for another time. I love these pants!

This hi-lo sweater is so adorable, but the cool honeycomb stitch is an open stitch so I see myself wearing a white button down underneath. I wanted to close this outfit out with a pair of dark brown ankle boots, but I haven’t been exactly lucky in that search. I did find these, though:

I found these very cute taupe colored booties at Marshalls Home Goods. They’re Madden Girl (judge away) and they were $25. I could not pass them up. So let’s talk cost effectiveness–the pixie pants cost me $20.96, the sweater cost me $22.16, and the boots were $25.

This outfit cost $61.12 without factoring in taxes. Still less than $100 and it works all together and with other pieces. Wise investments and very affordable and I can’t wait to show it off! Photo shoot, maybe? I should probably start working on that!

the fabuless edition: what i wore and what i saved

Hey y’all! I am so excited to share with y’all my looks and my savings from the past weekend! Y’all. I love overalls so much. They were my go-tos in middle school as my style was dictated by the awesomeness that was the 90’s. When we weren’t in uniforms we lived in baggy jeans and overalls, fresh kicks, bubble down coats (in Charleston!), and baby doll dresses.

What was the year? It feels like 1995. I was straddling the line between Aaliyah and Cher Horowitz. No Monets here. I wasn’t a total Betty, but you weren’t touching my style. I had the silver pair of Cher’s white patent leather Mary Jane platforms and I had Aaliyah’s Tommy Hilfiger overalls–it wasn’t a game at 13. I was giving you everything!

*I had that pen, too*

So you see what my life was like back in 1995? It was everything! Until the Charleston County School District decided we had to wear uniforms and pay them to wear our regular clothes. AS IF! But on those Tag Days–the fashion show of our lockerless halls was on and popping! We, the entire 8th grade class, served you overalls with Air Jordans, Grant Hills, and smooth Willie Ds (those are Air Force Ones for those of you not from Charleston) a la Crucial Conflict’s “Hay” video and you dealt with it!

That day still sticks with me. I miss overalls. Why were babies and toddlers only allowed this level of comfort and cool? “Why did my mainstay forsake me,” I wondered. But God.

But God said, “hey Girl, I got you. I’m bringing this one back. Get comfortable and get stylish. You’re welcome.”

Thank you Big God. You’re always looking out! I got a cropped pair of overalls from Abercrombie&Fitch about a year and a half or so and they’ve been great. I wore them in the latest #holycitychicks photo shoot (coming soon) and while chatting with my fellow boss chicks we talked about overalls being back. I really wanted a flared pair and Old Navy and Gap had recently dropped those looks.

I went to Old Navy and they only had the cropped pair, but my girl Liz aka the Charleston Weekender told me she saw a pair at Gap and they were on sale. I saw them online and that they were 40% off the regular price and I wasn’t too thrilled. I was going to just put it off, but an impromptu trip to King Street said otherwise.

Their sale of an additional 40% off all sale prices had me grabbing jeans I wouldn’t normally buy. I walked past the overalls several times, but I finally stopped and checked them out. $14.99 with an extra 40% off was something I could live with. I tried them on and really liked the fit, but the best part didn’t come until check out.

$4.18. AMERICAN! Y’all, I got 3 pairs of jeans for $15.56 USD!

Do you know how excited I was to wear these $4.18 overalls?!

*Clutch and earrings: Juicy Couture*

Do you see that face? That’s the face of a girl whose out here winning at savings! Not even caring about errant background obstructions–just saving money and happy about it! You know what I did after that? I went back and found another pair of jeans for $4.54!

You really couldn’t tell me anything this weekend. I was low key balling. H&M and Old Navy caught these dollars, too! I was cute and chic and my bestie’s baby shower!

*My new $5.98 jeans*

*Blouse: H&M; Shoes&Heart ring: Old Navy; Leaf jewelry: Forever 21; Bracelets: Pandora*

When I went back to Gap on Sunday and got the red jeans the girls who worked there said that I was the first person they’d seen who looked good in them AND they even made my but look good. I’m posting out takes right now because #winning.
